Portugal is a small island at the edge of the European Continent. The winds of the Atlantic blow round the country and sandy beaches frame the country. Now it is difficult to imagine that it was once a mighty kingdom with numerous colonies outside its territory. Notwithstanding this all Portugal has preserved its nobility and carefully keeps memories of old ages. The sights of the country are the proof to this. In the 14th century Portugal has explored half of the world to Europe, and in the 21st century we explore it for us.

In the 14th century the country where the population hardly exceeds two million, has created the most progressive fleet, the most perfect navigational equipment and the most precise geographical maps. To the 16th century Portugal has become one of the greatest and richest world empires. The oceanic element has risen to the zenith of grandeur, but the terrestrial element has not spared the majestic monarchy. Now this country has modestly gone to the second place and it feels fine and cozy here in this remote quiet European corner.

Modern Portugal significantly differs from that great empire. This modest country with solid national traditions is different from neighboring Spain, and is unlike any other European country. The quiet and measured life of the Portuguese is surprising and astonishing. It seems nobody is ever in a hurry here.

The long coastline, sunny climate and the relaxing rhythm of the Portuguese life make the country very attractive for rest. Its special attractiveness is that being a part of a European country; Portugal has preserved rural enclaves in its territory. Here time has stopped running and ancient traditions keep flourishing till now. The compactness of the country easily lets you combine all the best that a trip can offer: sandy beaches, picturesque landscapes, rich history, wonderful cuisine, attractions, sport facilities and hospitality of the local people.

A very essential difference simplifying the life of tourists is that the Portuguese speak foreign languages. In Portugal even an elderly cleaner in a very small town can make herself clear in a few foreign languages without any difficulties. That is why it is quite difficult to get lost here – people will find you, they will help, explain everything to you, and in case of necessity will accompany you.

The climate in Portugal is distinguished with its diversity; it depends on an exact region, relief, width and proximity to the sea. It results in soft winters, first of all characteristic to Algarve. In the North and in Central Portugal, especially in regions that border with Spain, winters are cooler, though the middle temperature is more temperate as compared with the rest of Europe. Snowfalls are frequent here, especially in the mountains of Serra da Estrela, where the highest point of continental Europe is situated (1991 meters). Thanks to those snowfalls it is possible to go skiing here.

Summer is usually hot and dry, especially in inner regions, but the summer heat softens the coolness on the beach. In autumn Portugal experiences many warm and sunny days.

Thanks to its geographical width, as well as the influence of the Gulf Stream, that passes by this place, soft climate predominates on the Archipelago of the Azores the whole year round. Thanks to these factors, the temperature of the sea near the archipelago is warm both in winter and in summer, contributing to the development of water sports.

The climate in Madeira is exceptionally soft subtropical, and the middle temperature is 24 °C in summer and 19°C in winter. Thanks to the waters of the Gulf Stream the temperature of the sea remains warm the
whole year round.

Portugal is a country with a Republican system. The President is elected for five years and no more than for two terms.

The biggest cities are Porto, Coimbra, Faro.

Though the majority of the Portuguese are Catholics, the Constitution of the country guarantees freedom of religion to the representatives of the most diverse religion confessions.

The language originates from Latin and occupies the third place for the number of its speakers in the world. Portuguese has an official status together with a number ofcountries in Africa (in Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe), in Southern America (Brazil), as well as in Eastern Timor (Asia). Many Portuguese are fluent in English, French and Spanish.
