Indonesia is the biggest archipelago in the world, comprising of 5 big and 30 groups of small islands. On the whole the archipelago consists of more than 17500 islands, around 6000 are inhabited. The total territory of Indonesia is 2 million square kilometers.

The name of the country consists of two Greek words “indos” meaning “Indian” and “nesos” meaning “island”.

The biggest islands are Sumatra, Borneo (2/3 belongs to Indonesia, 1/3 belongs to Malaysia), Java, Celebes, Irian Jaya, with a common name “Greater Sunda Islands”. Lesser Sunda Islands and Maluku, as well as New Guinea, Islands form a part of Indonesia. Java is the most densely inhabited island.

The Republic of Indonesia consists of 32 provinces and special territories and is geographically divided into four groups: Great Sunda (islands of Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Sulawesi); Lesser Sunda (small islands from Bali till Timor); Maluku (the islands between Papua and Sulawesi); and Papua situated in eastern end of the island. The tropical forests cover about two thirds of the whole of Indonesia, and the wonderful coastal line stretches about 5.150 km.

Indonesia is a country of rich culture and historical heritage. During the course of the time the culture was inseparably connected with the culture and was influenced by migrants from western and Arab countries. As a result of joint creative efforts of diverse nations, who came to the archipelago, a deposition of different cultures took place. The country was influenced by Hinduism and Buddhism, which first of all came here from India and from the 8th centuries, had their influence and were consolidated in Java and Bali. It was also influenced by Islam, which was brought here by tradespeople and preachers from the Middle East; European traditions that were adopted by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later by the Dutch right from the beginning of the 19th century.

The population is about 230 million people, being the fourth in the world.

Indonesian is the official language.

Religion

Islam (90%), Christianity, Buddhism, Animism. Almost all the inhabitants on the island of Bali follow Hinduism, influenced by Buddhism. In the inner regions of the island Animism is widely spread. This is the faith to all possible types of spirits hidden in volcanoes, rivers, trees, rocks, as well as in the wind and elsewhere.
Form of Government

Indonesia is a presidential republic. The president is the head of the state and the government. He is elected by the National consultative congress for a 5 years term.

Climate

The climate in Indonesia is equatorial and subequatorial.

The most suitable time for visiting Indonesia is from April till October. Two seasons are differentiated here: dry and humid, but as a whole the country does not experience rainy seasons, that is why you can visit Indonesia the whole year round.

Cuisine

Rice is one of the basic products of Indonesian cuisine. Traditionally in some islands people prefer corn, sago and sweet potato. Different fish and diverse marine products are very popular here. Coconut is widely spread in Indonesian cuisine. They grow everywhere. Among tea and coffee made of local sorts, fresh juice, ice tea is popular. Breweries offer a few types of local beer.
