An army entered the country in 1398, and in 1526 the descendant of Tamerlane Babur conquered practically all the territory of India and founded the empire of Great Mongols, which existed till 1857. In 1828-1835 Great Britain took all the political power. In 1947 India became independent, and in 1950 it was proclaimed a democratic republic. Nowadays government system is federative republic. The Indians proudly call themselves “the biggest democracy” in the world. The President is the head of the country. He mainly performs representative functions.
